Chapter Eighteen

The anticipation grew within her as Eva watched from the window of the private jet. They had crossed the Atlantic coast moments ago, Cape Cod evoking memories of vacations past. Now the scenery was so familiar. Once they passed the urban sprawl of Boston on their right and followed the Massachusetts turnpike west, every town brought Eva closer to her home, and the possible horrors that awaited. When Worcester crept into view, they were on approach and only a few thousand feet in the air.

“It looks so familiar, and yet so surreal from this height, like someone built a model,” she observed.

“Don't remain detached for too long, Dr. Scott,” Rick advised, prompting Eva to turn to Swanson.

“They said pending the outcome of the delivery of your report,” he said in reference to their marriage. “You aren't coming home, not yet.”

In many ways, this comment relived Eva. In others, it was yet another hurdle to overcome.

Madden reached across to buckle her in. “Make sure your trays are locked and in the upright position.” Eva looked at her husband and smiled at his attempt to ease her nerves.
